Recent changes in the music industry have allowed many
artists the ability to be prolific in their output, but few have had the
success of Jon Foreman. Foreman is lead singer, guitarist and song writer of
Switchfoot, partner of Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) in Fiction Family, and now
has begun his second topical set of EPs in the form of solo work in The
Wonderlands. Sunlight is the first part of another four-part story, the first
set of four being the Seasons set followed by the Limbs and Branches ‘best of’
album based on Seasons. The Wonderlands 4 EP set is focused on each hour of the
day with a song representing that hour.
Soothing and dream-like, Foreman’s lyrics shine true of
faith and the struggle that is this human life in “All God’s Children“. In his
lyrics hope prevails. “Terminal”, with steady, hot percussion producing the
feeling of life’s great march to an end, reminds of this life not being
infinite, not perfect but a soul in God’s likeness:

With terminal hearts, terminal
parts
Flickering like candles, shimmering
like candles
We're fatally flawed, we're fatally
flawed
“Caroline” is a sweet ballad of a person long forgotten and
now recalled, and with its sweets strings “The Mountain” gives a poignant turn.
“Patron Saint Of Rock And Roll” gives a playful side with underlying ‘toy’
piano and a solid break with soft chorus accompanied by low, heavy bass and
horns fading in. Big and majestic in sound and message is “You Don’t Know How
Beautiful You Are”.
Forman’s languid vocals continue to be seductively laid back
in the classic southern California sound. This coupled with his thought provoking
lyrics and melody to match mood make Wonderlands: Sunlight a pick for the
summer’s jukebox of hits.
