Following Thousand Foot Krutch’s (TFK’s) 2014 release of Oxygen: Inhale, Exhale finds the group back to
full-speed aggressive rock from the milder side Inhale provided. Mixing spoken
word, occasional rap among vocals throughout with thrash guitar and hard
hitting rhythm they have found their way back to their roots. Trevor McNevan’s vocals find a home in youthful
spirit despite being a fixture for two decades on the CCM rock circuit.
Among a number of classic sounding TFK tunes, Give Up
the Ghost is not mere party-up for concert fodder but holds court over the
remainder of the album with feeling and story well told in its verse. The
feeling of hope among despair is displayed in both “Running with
Giants” stating all the things a person can be and still be safe in Christ
and “Incomplete” similar to many TFK anthems with
the chorus sometimes echoing the softer offerings of TFK’s foray into
California pop-punk as the band FM Static.
“A Different Kind of Dynamite” and “Adrenaline “ portray the heavy
rockers TFK is well known for. The final two songs on the album show both TFK’s
musicianship and range with “Born Again” having something special in matching
beat to verse that stays with the listener and “Honest” being the sole entry with
strings and light vocals giving a message of hope.
TFK’s Exhale, for the most part, seems custom made for live
performances. This could be the summer rocker for the CCM concertgoer with
something between revolt and hope throughout.
