Basswalla

Artist: Adham Shaikh
Label: Black Swan
Release Date: May 26, 2015
Duration:  11 tracks, 1:12:12

Basswalla, the first release by Adham Shaikh in over five years, is as much a musical journey as it is a spiritual journey. Including both new and remixed original material, the collection touches on world music (with an emphasis on his Indian background) mixed with electronica. Sounding, for the most part, like Cirque du Soleil backing instrumental, Shaikh’s offering is a mix of high spirited electronica, dance music, experiential instrumentals, with a touch of everything from Spanish guitar to rap.

Both “Basswalla” and “Sabadub (Floating Soul Mix)” are bright and flowing with a mix of flute, percussion and electronica. “Collective” continues this movement giving a feel for Bob Marley with a related single lyrical interlude.

“Vibe Hunter (The Elders Dance Mix)” showcases organ with conga-like percussion providing a lighter side. ”Beyond I (Desert Sky Reframe)” has a definite middle-eastern flare with a dream-like feel. Featuring two flamenco sounding guitar loops, “Rumba Dub” gives a new and appealing showing.

As electronica, with its lopes and beats, goes “Water Prayer (Deep Crystal Mix)” may provide the most inspiring movement of this collective. All told, Basswalla is a solid offering of this musical form.
